Thick, dense, and well-made. Excellent value for the price. (Size S is a little rougher)
I have learned, over the past 2+ years of ordering (and returning) a fair number of bamboo items on Amazon, that not all bamboo products are created equal. It’s a fabulous material for many reasons (light, naturally impermeable/antibacterial, strong, non-toxic/natural, stain-resistant, visually pleasing, sustainable)… but if it’s not assembled and finished with attention to its properties, it can be splintery, prone-to-warping, and prone-to-splitting—all qualities which would be particularly unpleasant in kitchen items that you handle daily. So that was the first thing that impressed me about these boards: despite being such a reasonable price ($14.99 CAD), they look and feel well made. The second thing that impressed me was their thickness: they are definitely a little thicker than this type of 3-set wooden board tends to be. That bodes well for their longterm resistance to warping, splitting. I’m also impressed that they arrived “pre-oiled”, ie, already conditioned. You can tell they aren’t parched (again, that’s a quality I’ve seen in other lesser bamboo products). Great features about these boards: - very smoothly finished around edges and grooves; no snags or splinters - the M and L are comprised of 3 cross-laminated layers—ie, the grains going in cross-directions—which means they are unlikely to warp and split, provided they’re cared for - they have thoughtful finger-grooves on the ends, deep enough to allow for easily picking them up from the counter, without angling the board and spilling juices - all 3 have decently-deep grooves around the perimeters to catch juices - easy to stash in the same amount of space a single hefty cutting ‘block’ would take - when you peer up-close at the cross-cuts on the ends, you can see these are made from a dense-grained bamboo variety Lesser quality details: - the smallest board doesn’t have the same cross-lamination that other 2 do, meaning it is more likely to warp and split - the S board, also, feels a little sharper/rougher around the edges (not splintery, nothing that severe—just slightly less refined) Of course there’s no way to verify the claims on this listing that it’s made with completely non-toxic glues… but I can say that I noticed a lovely, familiar smell when I opened them; it immediately reminded me of the (expensive) Shun board and knifeblock I used for years with my Shun knives. Whether this is from production or from conditioning I don’t know, but I do know not all bamboo items arrive with that lovely mild natural whiff. There isn’t eve a hint of a chemical or gluey smell. I was curious, and looked up whether plastic or bamboo cutting boards are considered more sanitary. FWIW, since bamboo doesn’t degrade and get ‘chewed up’ the way plastic does, you don’t get toxic micro-bits flaking off into your food, and you don’t get those rough nooks and crannies and slices where bacteria can accumulate. That’s another compelling reason to like these attractive boards. (Caveat: I would personally minimize use of serrated knives, which will slice deep into *any* board, and likely lead to deep grooves. Just my 2 cents. Also, it's good to occasionally condition the board w/mineral or coconut oil, or Bamboo Goo (etc).

Beautiful Dark Colour from Carbonized Bamboo, Great Quality
These boards look different than my other bamboo cutting boards because they have a dark finish. I have learned that the dark colour comes from carbonization, which is achieved by pressure-steaming the bamboo to caramelize its natural sugars rather than using artificial stains or dyes. This process creates a darker colour that goes all the way through the material, so it won't flake or fade with use. Carbonization also makes the bamboo fibers a little bit softer, making the surface a little easier on knives than non-carbonized bamboo. These boards each have a groove around the perimeter for catching crumbs or liquid. The opposite side does not have any grippy things on it to prevent the board from sliding which I actually appreciate because sometimes I want a totally flat surface without the groove, so I can flip the board over and use that side. I am not too bothered by the lack of grippy feet, if I really don't want the board to slide then I put a wet folded cloth or paper towel underneath. But most of the time it doesn't slide enough to bother me to do so. I love how thick these boards are and I love the three different sizes. The smallest one is the one I use the most. I wash them by hand in the sink with soap and water and I occasionally apply a coat of food grade mineral oil. These boards actually come pre-coated with mineral oil and I could tell. I could feel it, but not in a bothersome way. Just in a way that I was impressed with how well these boards were prepared. They are definitely nicer than all of my other bamboo boards.

Beautiful cutting boards, love the variety in sizes
I was really impressed with these cutting boards! I like that they come already pre-oiled, and I love that there's four of them! They are all very useful, and I use all four when I'm cooking. They have grooves around their perimeter to allow juices/liquids from fruits and veggies to drain (so it doesn't pool on the surface), and there are also handle-like grooves on the bottom (on the short sides of the cutting boards) for a comfortable grip. They did smell very strongly of wood and wood oil when they came, and I washed it once well with soap and water. One thing to note is that these are not whole wood pieces, but a few pieces put together stuck with wood glue, so it's normal for them to have cracks, and crack over time. That being said, I would remedy these sooner rather than later, as it can become a breeding ground for bacteria later (if food gets trapped in there). As with all wood products, these should not be left saturated in water for long, and should not be put in a dishwasher. I had a bunch of plastic cutting boards in my kitchen that I replaced with these, over growing concerns with micro plastics and potentially ingestion of them (especially with plastic cutting boards and surfaces). Overall, I'm very happy with the shape, variety of size, and performance of these cutting boards, and would recommend them to anyone looking to replace their current cutting boards.

This is a top quality bamboo cutting board
This four piece bamboo cutting board set is top quality, and the four different sizes of boards range from 17” to 9” in length. The design and manufacturing of these boards have been top quality and well thought out as they are pre-oiled and ready for use, as well as having a groove around the entire perimeter of each board to catch any liquids or drippings. I can tell you that when the four boards arrived as an assembled package to my home, I was surprised, and almost shocked, by how heavy the whole package was. This attests to the quality of the wood used in this product. I have been using the two smaller boards over the past week and they are a pleasure to use as their weight makes them extremely stable on the counter, and they are very easy to clean. The cutting blades that comes into contact with these boards during usage does not impact any perceptible damage to the boards’ surface which leads me to believe that these boards will definitely outlast the other boards that I have which are made out of soft wood. The groove that runs along the top edge of the boards effectively gathers any juices or drippings which are coming off whatever you’re cutting so it doesn’t end up on your counter or the floor. This is something every cutting board should have.
