Customer reviews

Product Is Excellent — Purchasing Process Was Needlessly Difficult
Product Review: The Echo Dot Max itself is excellent. The sound quality is impressive for its size, functionality is solid, and Alexa performs exactly as expected. Once everything was set up, the device worked great and feels well designed. I genuinely enjoy the product and look forward to continuing to use Alexa devices in the future. PURCHASING & CUSTOMER SERVICE EXPERIENCE (Important Context): I want to provide context around the purchasing process, as it required a significant amount of time, persistence, and unnecessary stress. I originally attempted to purchase two older versions of this product (used). After multiple payment processing issues, I was forced to cancel and attempt to repurchase, at which point the items disappeared entirely and could not be located. After contacting customer service, I was told that no new or used stock of those models remained. After the representative spoke with a supervisor, I was offered a price-match arrangement on the newest model instead. I received an email confirming this offer and was instructed to complete the full-price purchase and then call back to receive reimbursement of the price difference. I followed those instructions exactly. When I called back, I was told by another agent and supervisor that the reimbursement could not be processed until the item was delivered. I waited, received the device, and called again. At that point, despite prior confirmations (now involving multiple frontline agents and supervisors), I encountered repeated resistance to honoring the agreement. The call turned into hours of back-and-forth, during which I was repeatedly told the reimbursement could not be done, despite written confirmation stating otherwise. During this process, I was repeatedly encouraged to end the call without resolution or to be transferred to the Echo/Alexa specialist team, with the suggestion that they had authority over the purchase. This created additional DELAYS & DEFLECTION, even though the issue was not related to product functionality but to a previously confirmed purchase arrangement. The situation became EXTREMELY STRESSFUL, as the purchase required funds I had set aside for essential insurance payments, and an NSF would have resulted in penalties I could not afford. The prolonged uncertainty was disheartening, especially after relying on information that had been repeatedly confirmed. After several hours of persistence and refusing to allow the issue to be dismissed or deferred further, the agreement was finally honored and the matter was resolved. Additional Observation: After everything was resolved, the original models I was told were unavailable suddenly appeared back in stock. I was then able to purchase the two used devices (used) as I originally wanted at the reasonable price they were still listed as. FINAL THOUGHTS: The product itself is outstanding, and I’m very happy with the Echo Dot Max and the additional Echo devices I later purchased. My hope in sharing this experience is simply that internal communication and consistency improve, so customers are not placed under unnecessary financial stress after relying on confirmed information. Despite the ordeal, I remain a satisfied Alexa user and appreciate the final resolution to some respect. But, overall, it does NOT MAKE up for, nor compensate for the Uneeded, undue TIME & STRESS endured, especially after I had mentioned my current Ongoing HEALTH Related Battle. My Opinion: While the product itself is excellent, this experience showed me how difficult it can be for individual customers to resolve issues when information is inconsistent across multiple representatives.

Thoroughly Impressed
I purchased two Echo Dot Max speakers with stands. One for the upstairs and one for the downstairs. I already installed Amazon Basic Smart LED Light Bulbs in the living room and upstairs bedroom. Having already set up the Alexa App on my phone with WIFI connections, the Echo Dots took less than 3 minutes to set up. The automatically synced with my Alex App, downloaded a firmware update, and were ready to go once I grouped them according to their location in my home; one for the living room and one for the main bedroom. I didn't have to input WIFI names and passwords, the whole set up process was extremely easy and seamless. The Echo Dots once assigned to their group location and their microphones enabled, easily controlled my lights in the upstairs bedroom and downstairs living room just by giving the Echo Dots a command: "Alexa, turn on the lights in the bedroom" or "Alexa turn on the lights in the living room". Any command I would give to the App on my phone the Echo Dots commensurately responded to. I then linked my Pandora account to the Echo Dots which was super easy to do on the App and now the little Echo Dots can play any station or music I chose on Pandora. Have to say I am thoroughly impressed with the technology. Yes they are a bit pricey but well worth it because of all the features they have and they sound fantastic too. They look great on my bed stand and living room end table. I don't know how I got along without them. I will probably buy a third Echo Dot for my other upstairs guest bedroom. No wonder Amazon is as big as they are. It's an incredible company providing goods and services that everyone can thoroughly enjoy. UPDATE: I purchased the third Echo Dot Max for my guest bedroom. One note: I had difficulty connecting the WIFI due to the remoteness of the guest bedroom. The problem I had when setting up in the upstairs bedroom, was that the Alexa App prompted me to input the WIFI password which I did but it wouldn't recognize it and asked for me to input it again. I did this four times when I decided to take the Echo Dot Max and the Lamps downstairs into the same room as the WIFI router and the problem went away. The setup proceeded without any issues bypassing the need to input the WIFI Password. I took the lamps and the Echo Dot Max back upstairs and the system works. The Echo Dot easily recognized three smart bulbs turning them on and off with a spoken Alexa command. Also streams Pandora like the other Echo Dots.

Not sure how such a power is packed in this small body, but compared to other bigger and more expensive speakers I've had before, this tiny ball beats them all (I've had two Google Music Nest speakers and Sony SRS XE300). I was in search for primarily compact speaker that both looks good, and has a decent sound, for my living room tv cabinet. I've had bigger speakers before, but they were either too big or I didn't like sound at all. All the smart assistant features were on last place by importance, as I looked for speaker on first place and then everything else was a bonus - which is absurd if you think about this one being primarily smart assistant. Long story short, I love how sound on this thing turned out to be. Out od the box it's set to sound boomboxy, as majority of active/bt speakers are today, but quickly setting treble slider to max and mid range to half way to max, resulted in much needed clarity in higher frequencies. I love how space filling the sound is, wherever you place this Echo. Only after some 80% volume sound starts to suffer and distort, but I'm literally never gonna listen at those volumes so it's fine. I know vinyl purists would hard disagree, but I even connected my turntable over to it over bt, and it sounds great! And as an added bonus, it looks great and subtle, not screaming I'm a speaker in everyone's face. I might get another one to link them as stereo pair at some point. I love it.

Worth the Upgrade – Huge Sound Improvement Over My Old Echo Dots
I recently replaced a few of my older Echo Dots with the new Echo Dot Max, and the difference is immediately noticeable. I didn’t realize how much I was missing until I heard the upgraded sound. The bass is dramatically deeper and the overall audio is much fuller and clearer compared to my previous Dots. It easily fills the room now instead of sounding like a small speaker sitting on a shelf. Streaming music through services like Amazon Music and Spotify sounds noticeably richer, especially at higher volumes. Vocals are crisp, and the added bass gives everything more depth without distortion. It really feels like a proper room speaker rather than just a smart assistant. Setup was simple through Amazon’s Alexa app, and I appreciate that it has a built-in smart home hub. I was able to connect and control my lights and other devices without needing additional hardware. The automatic sound adjustment is a nice touch too—it adapts well to the space without me having to tweak settings. I also like pairing it with another Echo for even better sound. It creates a much more immersive listening experience compared to my older setup. Alexa responses are quick and feel more natural, and the privacy button gives added peace of mind. Overall, replacing my old Echo Dots with the Echo Dot Max was absolutely worth it. If you’re thinking about upgrading for better sound and stronger smart home integration, this one delivers.
