Great for coffee lovers and explorers -- fun blind tasting kit. Good Fresh Coffee!
This review is for the 5 pack tasting kit. You get 5 different single origin whole coffee beans, each bag contains 2 oz of beans for a total of 10 oz. Overall this is a fun blind tasting kit -- each bag has a colored label, but doesn't tell you what region the beans are from. There are flavor profile cards with the region that are all sealed in an envelope and you are encouraged not to open it until you've tried them all. It also comes with a notecard for you to jot down your own tasting notes as you brew each cup so you can document and discover your tastes as you go on the journey! I placed my order on 11/30 -- and the beans I received had a roast date of 10/16 -- which to me is surprisingly fresh given how they have this packaged. Most places, especially online roasters only give you a "best by" date and only the few roasters that roast fresh will actually label it with the roast date -- so kudos to Driftaway! It's not the best value at $33 for 10oz of coffee, so if you already know what you like, you can get 12oz of coffee for ~$26 from a high end specialty roaster or probably even less from a local roaster. Or you could even put together your own sampler pack for a bit less, so you are paying a bit more for this kit -- but only marginally more and you get a pretty cool curated experience, kind of like having your own Coffee tasting Sommelier in a box! Overall the coffee beans were fresh and delicious and this kit would make a terrific gift for any coffee lover or explorer!

More than tasting but a journey.
I was surprised by what I received. I was expecting a few bags of mixed coffees to try but what I got was much more. I received the 5 unlabeled bags of coffee, they are only given a color, and explanations of the tastings as well as a detailed taste chart to help with descriptions. I believe that there was supposed to be a grind sample included but I could not find one. The idea is that you blindly taste the coffees, give an evaluation of each one using the included guide, then pick your favorite and submit your reviews on their website. From there you can subscribe to receive coffee customized to your taste as well new coffees to try. It still is much more than that, each coffee is from a different part of the world and from different growers. It seems that the target growers are small independent producers, and or female owned business. There will be a sealed envelope that contains info cards that explain the taste and aroma, the location from which the coffee is grown and produced, the owners and company background. You are expected to only open this after tasting the coffees. So... you are getting much more than just a bag of coffee to try but a unique experience. Knowing the origin and the story of the product is the experience, not just the taste. Solid 5 stars on this one.

This box has a really fun presentation, especially if you're giving it as a gift. Each of the packages of coffee are color coded with no names. There's a little envelope that they tell you not to open until you've tried the coffee, that tells you what each coffee is and gives you details on the origin and the roast and such. They have a little card to fill out with notes when you've tasted it. It's fine that they have you taste it without any preconceived notions of what the coffee is. The price is quite expensive, so this would be appropriately priced if you're trying to get a fun gift, but I don't think it is a good price for your regular coffee drinking. It was $40, or about $34. If you do subscribe and save for one and a quarter pounds of coffee. I usually buy coffee by Dean's Beans, they are a very premium coffee company, with delicious beans, and a pound of coffee from them generally runs in the 14 to $16 range. This company seems to want you to subscribe and get coffee regularly from them, so possibly it's cheaper if you do it that way, I haven't looked into that yet. I've tasted one of the coffees so far, the yellow one, and it is absolutely delicious. I'm guessing the other ones are going to be high quality as well, but just a variety of different beans and roasts.
