You put it on the lid, press the button and the arms grab onto the jar and lid before it starts doing its thing. There arent a bunch of buttons or complicated settings to figure out, just position it correctly and let it go. It grips the lid securely and provides a steady twist instead of that jerky struggle you get when trying to force open a stubborn jar by hand I also like that its rechargeable so theres no digging through the junk drawer looking for batteries every time you want to use it. The size is compact enough to store easily in a kitchen drawer or cabinet and the whole thing feels reasonably sturdy. The rubber feet help keep everything planted while it works too, which is important because watching an opener slowly walk itself across the counter would be pretty funny but not very useful This would be especially handy for anyone who has trouble getting a strong grip on tight lids, but honestly I can see plenty of people using it just because its easier. Some jars are ridiculously difficult to open even when you have perfectly good hands, and this takes that whole fight out of the equation. A little big but it's the best and easiest opener I've tried
My wife has arthritis in her hands and her ability to open jars has been decreasing for a while. I've tried several different jar openers but they all seem to rely on being able to grip the jar or push it down hard enough to keep it from turning, and she always ends up bringing the jars to me because she doesn't have the hand strength. That's why I ordered the INSTACAN Rechargeable Electric Jar Opener. This fully automatic powered opener is the first one I've seen that doesn't rely on the user's strength at all. Instead, one press of the button on this electric opener and its geared grippers tightly grip the jar and lid separately, then turns the lid to open it. Genius! The device is a lot bulkier than the other openers I've tried, so we needed to make room for it where she could get to it easily. I like the fact that it's self-contained with a rechargeable battery, but it doesn't have an on/off switch to disconnect the battery. My experience with such devices is that they tend to be dead when you want to use them because they drain the battery when not in use, and that tends to kill the battery altogether. To simulate "shelf time", I didn't bother charging the device before diving into testing it out. I tried a bunch of different jars (I think 8) and it was still going strong, so I'm not too worried about shelf life. Jars come in all sorts of shapes and sizes, and this opener worked on everything I tried from small jars to about 3 3/4". That's pretty much every jar she's ever asked me to open so that's good enough for me!
