One Of The Better Beginner Paddles I’ve Used

I play pickleball pretty regularly, usually 3-4 times a week, and I’ve gone through a lot of different paddles ranging from beginner budget options all the way up to higher-end competitive models. I’d consider myself intermediate level moving toward advanced play at this point, so I’ve had a chance to get a pretty good feel for what different paddles do well. For a beginner-friendly paddle, this one honestly impressed me quite a bit. The biggest strengths here are control, consistency, and overall feel. It has a very forgiving sweet spot and feels easy to play with right away, which is exactly what newer players need. Control is very solid, especially on dinks, resets, and general placement shots. Spin was also better than I expected for this category of paddle. It’s not an extreme spin machine, but there’s definitely enough texture there to shape shots and add some variety. This is not what I’d call a true “power paddle,” but it still has enough punch when you need to speed things up or finish a point. It just leans more toward balanced control than raw explosiveness. The handle length felt comfortable too, and the paddle overall has a nice balanced feel in the hand without feeling overly head-heavy. Appearance-wise, I really like the colorway on this series. It stands out with a cool bold colorway, and would be appropriate for female players. Build quality also feels very good. JOOLA in general makes quality equipment, and even their more beginner-oriented paddles tend to feel polished and well finished. If I were recommending a paddle to a newer player, this would honestly be high on my list. The only caveat is that once you start approaching the intermediate levels, somewhere around the 2.8–3.0 range and beyond, you will eventually want something with a more power and responsiveness for harder drives, counters, and more aggressive play. But for learning the game properly and developing consistency, this is a really solid paddle.

I’ve started using this JOOLA Astral Perseus in the Watermelon color scheme and I am honestly obsessed with it. It is an easy five stars from me because it manages to blend higher end performance with a style that actually stands out on the court. The first thing that hits you, obviously, is the aesthetic. The color palette is vibrant and fun which is a huge upgrade from the sea of standard black or gray paddles you usually see. It brings a lot of personality to the court, and first and foremost, aren’t we just having fun? Beyond the visuals the performance is genuinely impressive. I’m an intermediate player, and I feel this paddle is perfect for someone ready to step from beginner to intermediate. It uses the signature Perseus shape which provides a massive sweet spot that makes my off center hits feel much more controlled. The carbon fiber surface has a really nice level of friction that lets me put some serious spin on my serves and dinks without having to overswing. I noticed that the handle construction feels really premium and solid in my hand which gives me a lot of confidence during fast exchanges at the kitchen line. You can really feel the engineering behind this one because it offers that perfect balance of power and touch. It is stiff enough to drive the ball deep with authority but has enough feedback that I can still execute delicate shots with ease. If you are looking for a paddle that performs at the next level, but has a unique look that sets it apart from everything else in your bag this is definitely the one to get. I am having a blast playing with it!

Control-Focused Paddle with Great Touch—Ideal for Beginner to Intermediate Players

As a 4.65 player, I’ve tested a lot of paddles, and the JOOLA Astral Perseus is a solid performer—just not quite my top choice at a higher level. That said, I think it really shines for beginner to intermediate players. The biggest standout is the control and soft touch. Resets, dinks, and kitchen play feel very comfortable and consistent, which makes it a great paddle for developing a well-rounded game. The carbon fiber face gives you enough spin to work with, without being overly aggressive or hard to control. It’s also lightweight and easy to handle, so it doesn’t feel taxing during longer sessions. Grip feels good and stays comfortable even in Florida heat. Overall, if you’re newer to the game or in that beginner/intermediate range looking to improve control and touch, this is a fantastic option. More advanced players may want something with a bit more power and pop, but it definitely holds its own.

Wet good paddle, neat design, good weight!

After taking this paddle out for a long hitting session, I’m honestly amazed by it. First of all, the watermelon color scheme stood out to me for its bright and fun aesthetic. Whilst playing with it, I noticed how good it felt in my hands. It had a solid weight, being not too heavy nor too light. Using this paddle was greatly satisfying to me and had the perfect weight. It balances control and power, allowing me to place shots almost exactly to where I intended them to go. The impacts resonated through the paddle in a solid and satisfying manner, rewarding shots to the sweet spot. The handle length and radius was a good size, especially for my smaller hands. Overall, I’d say that this paddle is perfect for players across skill levels and is especially fitting for more advanced players. It’s easy to use, has a good build quality, and most importantly, performs well on the court.
