The best coffee pod system you can get
Most people think that Nespresso copied Keurig, but it’s actually the other way around—and by a couple of decades. Anyway, we used to have Keurig for making the random quick cup of coffee, but no matter the brand or “premium” blend, the K-Cups always just produced the same vaguely watery brew. They’re OK, I guess. OK-Cups, if you will. We no longer do. The Nespresso machine—and Nestlé’s line of curated Nespresso coffees—is much, much better than anything the Keurig (and I mean any Keurig) can manage. If you haven’t looked at how the Vertuo line specifically works from a technological perspective, the system is ingenious. The pods tell the machine—via barcode (which is totally local; this setup does not require Wi-Fi)—how much water to pull, how hot to make it, how long to brew the coffee, and how fast to spin the pod (which replaces high pressure as the mechanism of extraction) so you can enjoy your espresso the specific way the specific blend was intended to be enjoyed. If you’re a gadget nerd or just like graceful machines or clever systems in general, the Vertuo line is for you. This model, the Vertuo Next (here branded by De’Longhi but also commonly branded by Breville), is basically the Honda Civic of these Nespresso machines; it’s the model most people seem to get. That has been doubly true for my family. We already had one Next. Now, we have two of them. The Vertuo Next works really well, and it works reasonably quickly. The only real flaw I can find with the system is that the automatic pod removal mechanism—which is comprised of two little arms that lift the pod out and drop it into the spent pod reservoir in the central tower of the machine—doesn’t always lift the pod correctly on the first try. It’s a minor flaw, but it’s pretty annoying because it’s the ONLY flaw. This is a bigger issue on our older Next machine than on this new one, so I assume the reliability of the feature is more or less random. The biggest “negative” with the Nespresso system is that the pods aren’t cheap and aren’t available at most retail stores. They’re around $0.90 to $1.30 a pop, and you have to buy them in sleeves from Nespresso directly. There’s always a week or two where we forego our daily Nespressos in that dead zone between our supply running out and us being bothered enough to reorder. (You can schedule your reorders if you want; we’ve just never done that.) Overall, the Nespresso Vertuo line is a somewhat expensive way to enjoy espresso at home, but it’s a very compelling way to do that, too. My wife and I are not (yet) the coffee version of foodies enough to get a big fancy espresso machine and futz about with different beans and grinds and tamping and aerating and water temperature and so on, and we’re so spoiled by the convenience and the quality of the different Nespresso blends that we can justify a coffee a day each out of this thing. I have recommended the Nespresso system to friends and family for some time, and I don’t see that changing anytime soon. If you can afford the pods, you’ll love this machine and the coffee it makes. NOTES: ✏️ When you buy a Nespresso machine, you usually get a little 12-coffee sampler and some coupons (for new Nespresso account holders). This machine came with both, but several of the pods were crushed (see attached picture). They were all still usable/brewable, and no loose coffee ever came out, which speaks to the durability of the aluminum Nespresso pod construction. I think this is a bit of a one-off issue, so it probably won’t happen with your order, but it’s worth mentioning. PROS 👍 Real gourmet coffee brewed perfectly 👍 Much better than any K-Cup option 👍 Simple one-button controls 👍 Ingenious ID and brewing system 👍 Very reliable and durable hardware 👍 Tall enough to accommodate larger drinkware; 16-20 oz tumblers seem to be the operational limit (provided you remove the cup platform accessory) 👍 Fast, clean brewing CONS 👎 Nespresso Vertuo pods aren’t available at most local big box stores or grocery stores 👎 No great “do-it-yourself” reusable pod options 👎 3-4x the cost of Keurig K-Cups 👎 Extractor arms don’t always work properly 👎 Machine itself is relatively expensive VERDICT ☕️ I would buy this again (and have!).

Sleek and easy Nespresso Vertuo Next coffee maker
Just set up the Nespresso Vertuo Next by De'Longhi in Matte Black and I’m already loving it. The machine looks premium and compact on the counter with its modern matte finish. It heats up super fast (under 30 seconds) and brews a perfect cup with rich crema every time using the barcode-reading pods. The only issue is the price of the pods! lol I’ve made everything from espresso to larger 8-12 oz coffees and over-ice drinks (all with great flavor and consistency). The 1L water tank is convenient, no leaks and cleanup is simple with the used pod container. Wi-Fi connectivity is a nice bonus for firmware updates. If you want café quality drinks at home with minimal effort, this one delivers beautifully. Highly recommend!
