Pelikan Souveran m405
In my opinion, Pelikan fountain pens are representative of the best European pens. Well-built, attractive, understated, all qualities that I appreciate. With care, a Pelikan should last for a lifetime. Care includes flushing at least every few fills and not abusing the nib when in use. Beyond that, just a soft cloth rub occasionally is sufficient. Specifically as to the 405, I prefer the blue/black/rhodium finish to the more commonly seen green/black/gold. Merely my preference. The size of the 2xx, 4xx pens is also a plus to me. Those who want a larger pen might consider. The 600, 800, or even the 1000 pens, but I do not like the feel of any larger than the 600, and, even then, still prefer the 200/400. For those who may be new to either Pelikan or to fountain pens, the most significant difference between 2xx and 4xx is that the 2xx pens are sold with steel nibs, although this can be exchanged with some dealers, or the steel can be replaced at a later time if you wish. My favorite pens are my Pelikans and my Namikis. While I prefer the Namiki (Pilot) nibs, I would hate to part with any of my pens and limit myself to either/or. Among my Pelikans, the m405 is my all-around favorite. If your pen budget allows you to consider this pen, you will not be disappointed with it. If the price difference between a 2xx and 4xx pen is a pinch, you will not be disappointed with the 2xx, either, and you will have an excellent start to your Pelikan collection when you add the 4xx later.

Excellent writer, annoyed at the price hike.
Absolutely beautiful writer. Lays down a thick line with butter-on-glass smoothness. Has a little bit of a baby-bottoming on the tip, but nothing too serious. I can confirm it's 100% genuine Pelikan. I bought this pen at exactly $216.60, and as I'm writing this with the price sitting at nearly $270, I think it's a bit crappy to raise the price on something right after someone buys one of them. Less than a week later, the price hikes up $60. That doesn't really sit well with me. This pen can be had at a price lower than $250. That was my limit when searching for this pen, and while it's not exactly my cup of tea with a broad nib, I can say that I'm proud to own it. It's a superb writer. If I had to gripe about the pen, I would say that the pinstripes of the colored section aren't exactly dead straight on the barrel. Sort of like a barber-shop pole, but a lot less severe, just slightly. You wouldn't notice it unless you owned it. But it's a very minor gripe. And you'll probably want a pen slip/case for this pen. I detest the idea of having it in a pocket without any protection.

M200: bouncy nib for non-gold!
I got the broad nib M200 - the ‘cheapest’ model which I still thought was a ripoff since I can get a 14k nib for that price. But I really wanted to try a Pelikan so I sprung for it. It’s TINY first of all, like a Sailor Pro Gear Slim. I have small lady hands though so I don't mind that. 2nd of all it’s a piston filler, you twist the back and it sucks up ink, and holds a lot for such a wee pen! Lastly and most importantly, the nib. For a steel nib, it is SO springy. If you’d have told me it was gold and I didn’t know better I’d have believed it 100%! Broad writes a nice wet line. I have it inked with Diamine Delamere Green and it’s great. That green little stripe near the neck of the pen is an ink window; not a green stripe really.

Beautiful smooth writer
The M400 is a beautiful pen and writes like a dream. The Pelikan EF nib is the width of other brands F nib and it's very smooth with perfect ink flow. I don't think I've ever owned a pen that writes this perfectly right out of the box. It's beautiful to look at and comfortable to hold. I have average/smallish sized hands and I like pens on the smaller side (but not tiny) with a slightly narrower grip. Posted, this pen is 5 7/8 inches long which is slightly longer than the Kaweco Sport and shorter than the Metropolitan. It hits the sweet spot for me. I'm glad I didn't size up. It's a keeper and was absolutely worth the money. Shipped quickly and safely, with all the authentic Pelikan packaging.
