Unique and Beautiful
The woman who lived in our house before us was a bit of a bird fanatic, so our backyard has become bird central over the years. I've grown fond of my feather visitors as well, so I figured I should get them a bigger and nicer feeder since the small one she left behind when she moved needed to be refilled daily. I tend toward a rustic, cottage/country vibe in my decorating, so I wanted a feeder that had some uniqueness and charm to it. After looking at many, many (expensive) feeders, I stumbled across this gem, and I just love it! The color is just as rich and red as pictured, and the whole thing is made out of high quality steel. As soon as I took it out of the box, I squealed because it is so nice for the money! It's not huge, but it will hold quite a bit of seed, certainly enough to feed my birds for at least a week on a half-full basis. It's heavy enough not to flail around in a breeze (and it made it through the recent swathes of severe storms without spilling any seed) but not too heavy that a good hook or branch couldn't easily support it. There weren't any directions in the box I received, but after a little investigation, you twist the weathervane on the top to unlock and remove the roof to refill. There was also this random red piece of plastic in the box which I determined was for post mounting, if you so choose. As for the weight-sensitive bar, there is a small wire toggle on the side that you can set to accommodate different bird weights, but there were no directions, so I winged it (excuse the pun). They all felt about the same to me, but no matter which you choose, they will all be too sensitive to accommodate those sneaky, feed-pilfering squirrels. This morning I spied a wren feeding with no issue from it, so your songbirds should be happy at any rate. I read another review that expressed concerns about water leakage and subsequent mold growth, but since ours is hanging from a hook under the lip of our covered patio, it's not really an issue for me, so I can't speak to that due to my special circumstances. Overall, I would most definitely purchase this again and again. Its finish should last a long time, especially when covered as mine is, and my birds will be fat and happy all year long.

Improved Design
This is a great feeder. It's sturdy and appears very well made. There have also been a number of improvements to the design since they took the current listing photos. The roof now comes off all in one piece instead of having a smaller door within the roof. It gives it a much cleaner look and I suspect this fill also make it much more squirrel proof. I mounted mine to an existing post I had from an old Perky Pet wooden feeder. I ended up just using some extra bolts nuts and washers and attached the red base that came with the feeder for pole mounting to the existing bracket I had. I like how the whole house slides off of the red mounted base to make it easier to fill and clean. There is also an optional hanger for hang from a tree or shepherd's hook, but I believe hanging it like that makes it easier for squirrels to get at it. So far I have had numerous birds and nary a squirrel has been seen even attempting to get at the seed. The perch has three different settings of tension to allow you to set it to be more sensitive. Also, the roof connects by using the weathervane to latch it closed. It's a very nice design. I would be surprised to see a squirrel master this one (if its pole mounted at least) It is a lovely red color (must nicer than the listing images). Although be warned it is like Cardinal camouflage. While I love the color, I imagine a standard green colored feeder or other more neutral color would help the birds stand out a bit more. I suppose it depends on which birds you are attempting to attract, of course.

Quality Sturdy Construction with Ample Seed Capacity
I love this red bird feeder! The all-metal construction is very sturdy and the attractive tin roof is removable for easy filling of up to 8 lbs. of bird seed. A removable top will make it easier to clean (every two weeks.) The feeding perch has four levels of tension to prevent squirrels and larger birds from stealing food if you want. Anything heavy and it will close over the seed tray. My Northern Cardinals are curious about the feeder on the first day I put it out. I'm confident it will be no time before they land on the feeding perch on this new feeder. They are already hovering over the feeder to get a closer look. Birds take time to get accustomed to new feeders. Of course the English Sparrows were eating out of it within minutes. Perky-Pet thoughtfully included a strong steel hanging hook that's removable if you'd rather use the post top hardware with screws they included for mounting on a wooden post. You can also just mount to a pole. They've thought of everything! As I'm reviewing this on the same day of receiving it, I'm waiting to see if a Northern Cardinal can eat from it on the lightest tension setting. I've wanted this feeder for a long time and I was very pleased when I opened the package. It was very well packed to keep the parts perfect. I think you'll probably love this.

Too soon to tell but good first impression.
We took it out of the box and assembled it and it's cute as can be. Hopefully, it really will be squirrel proof. Our four "house squirrels" have become seriously fat eating at my current feeders so I'll see what this new one does. ...........Five months later, I still love this feeder. It hangs in the middle of the yard from a rod iron pole with a shepherd's crook and there are small birds at it most of the time. The squirrels can climb the pole easy enough but can't get a grip on the shiny roof. so they do the skitter and slide to the ground, which is fun to watch. It is air tight, the seed stays dry, even this winter when the snow piled high on it, then melted off. I generally get only small birds at it, nut hatches, chickadees, etc. Once in a while cardinals. Large sunflower seeds block the opening but small ones work well. My neighbors have had one in their yard for 2 or 3 years now and it still looks good. I guess the secret is to hang it away from anything that will allow the squirrels to reach it from a tree branch or porch rail. I just ordered one for a birthday gift for my granddaughter. She'll like it, too.
