Stunning and Inspirational
"There and Back: Photographs from the Edge" exceeded my expectations in every way. I am a recreational climber, and have been aware of Jimmy Chin's athletic and photographic talents for some time. That being said, I still underestimated this book. I ordered it thinking it would be an excellent coffee table book, to casually flip through some fantastic scenic shots on occasion. Don't get me wrong, it is that, but it's so much more. The book has stories with a story, with the overarching tale being that of Jimmy's professional career. Following your heart can take you to unthought of places, and it's always inspirational to see someone turn their passion into their paycheck. The individual expeditions reveal more about his character, his growth, and the vast corners of the planet that are the subjects of his art. I bought this as a picture book, but I soon found myself reading all of the text, absorbing the stories behind the pictures, and shaking my head in wonder at the efforts to produce them. I would say it was Herculean, but Hercules' feats pale in comparison. Let's see him clean stables at 4,000 feet and -50 below! I highly recommend this for anyone, climber or not. Even if you're just looking for a picture book with cool scenery, it's a perfect choice, especially because it brings so much more to the [coffee] table.

Must have photo book for those interested in mountaineering
Book arrived in excellent condition, and without any Christmas messages from strangers. I'd first heard of the author after watching a doco about his ascent of Meru with Conrad Anker and Ozturk. This is also worth a watch if you enjoy this book as you get to see him working in his element, and the hardship and deprivations that are endured. The photo quality and composition is excellent throughout. The photography is organised into chronological order of his career , and demonstrates an interesting progressing over time. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and it would make an excellent gift for anyone interested in mountaineering , climbing or adventure photography.
